Found a New Subaru

Ok so i found this subaru wagon today. 1988 Subaru DL. 88 k. NO rust, zip zero nada. 3 problems. 1 its an auto, 2 its 2wd, 3 there was a small fire in the backseat so that will need replace and the headliner and other interior bits will need cleaned up.

 

My question is how hard is the 4wd conversion and do you think its worth it.

 

Hes askin 450 but i thought of offering him 100. Pretty nice looking but it is a dl and non 4wd so its like whats the point ya know.

 

Any ideas.

whats the point. Get a 4WD GL.

they are to be found. and they can be had for just as cheap.

my ideas, are well, just ideas. take it for what its worth, not much.

don't ban me though.

 

 

Okay I suppose if you got it, it would definitely have to be zero rust, and you would convert to 4wd. what caused the fire inside, were they making meth

I too, would pass on the DL. Just spend the same amount and get one that already has the 4WD installed.

 

well, here's what I would look at....

 

1. how often do you find GL 4wd around here any more.... not very often...

2. even the subaru front wheel drive is awesome for the snow.. my Dad's FWD wagon could go most anywhere....

3. how are the mechanicals of the new one, compared to Guido.

4. Do you have time to do the conversion?

5. Rust may kill guido in a few years, but if this one is clean, you can stay on top of it, and make it last a long time...

 

I'd get the 2wd, fix up the rear seat and headliner, and sell Guido and his single range. Then save up for a D/R.....

 

and with only 88k and Rust free, it's worth the $450 IMHO.

Actuallly what i was thinking is this other one would be a perfect daily driver. Provideing it runs and drives. Then that gives me the opportunity to take guido off the road and dare i say, Lift< :grin:, and put in the dual range. If it was a 5 speed it wouldnt be a contest because i know how shotty the autos were.

 

Mick is right, there arent that many of these floating around here like this. Little to no rust with under 100k. If i can get him to part with it for 100 bucks im doin it.

 

The interior wasnt bad. Only damage was to the back seat. Nothing a good cleaning cant fix. It is a DL though which means no options (again). But to find a near rust free carcus around here is really something.

Even if it was alittle rusty underneath it would still make a decent driver. I agree i dont really want to dig into anything biger then i half to but 100 bucks isnt much for a low miles engine and nice clean straight rust free body parts.

 

A 32 hour Drive and you can get one here in Mount Vernon Washington, its and 86 GL D/R for 250 bucks.................:grin: I just had put that out there, but really there are a billion and one Subaru's here, I could find you one and meet you half way.....................:)

Why not save your pennies, fly out here for a vacation and bring home a west coast gem. 4WD GL's command almost nothing out here - hell my local yard had an 88 GL D/R running driver for sale for $550 last month - probably still there - that's how bad they are wanted :rolleyes:. Come to the next WCSS, get all fixed up for your ride back, and have a nice vacation at the beach while you are here - isn't that worth the extra $1000 it would cost? And I'm sure you could save that much in a whole year am I right?

 

Don't buy a messed up DL and screw with 4WD swaps - I've been there and done that and let me tell you it's not all that it's cracked up to be. I think maybe myself, Rob (Turbone) and a handful of others are the only one's that have done it and it's not as simple as those who have never actually put tools to bolts would make it sound.

I do have to say that the 4wd converison on my RX was almost easier then a 4wd on an EA81. Like I said... ALMOST:-\

 

EA81's are not the easier of the two - EA82's are easier in my experience. But as with anything it depends a lot on the model/year/specifics of what you are converting. My 84 wagon.... well I'll never do another if that's any clue for you :mad:. The biggest drawback to the EA81 swap is having to change the gas tank.... BIG suck!

Yeah I've done a couple EA81 4wd conversions and my RX was almost in the same boat. I had to fab up a carrier bearing mount for it and figure out a way to put the mustache bar mounts onto the body since the welded nuts on the 2wd aren't there.

 

And I also did a gastank swap on my old RX too. Talk about a blast, especially when I dropped the donor tank from the parts car only to find it had a half a tank of worthless gas and it was heavy as a mofo:rolleyes:

you should at the least offer the hundred.

 

as was said if you can get it for a couple hun you can flip it for more than that later.

 

not neccessarily true.

I only got 900 for a 94 turbo leg wagon that was not rusted, a CO car.

The people around here are not that big into Subarus, just the 5 or so people we have on this board, and we all only want a AWD or 4wd subaru. might not make any money at all on this.
