1-3-2-4
I question... my car "ticks" are all speeds idle or at speed I was told to check to see which is bad.. but before going that way I was checking at the Subaru parts site and I see nothing but the SVX lifters are shown.. is that right? Anyways since I would have the valve covers off besides the lifters and gasket what else should I replace/inspect? Also reading around I understand they should not compress at all when the lifters are out and if they do they are bad.. given the age of my car and with 208K miles I should just go ahead and replace all of them? If so how many lifters in all does the car have?
Legacy777
It'd be hard to say how many are bad without pulling them out. I'd suggest bleeding them first and see if they hold. If not, they should be replaced. If you replace the valve cover gasket and grommets on the covers, you should be good. Not much else to replace. Don't forget the o-ring for the oil filler on the driver's side.
1-3-2-4
hmm thinking about doing this early spring.. I was looking at rockauto and they have one that's $13.17 and sold in packs of 4.. that part confused me does that mean i'm only getting 4 of them? as the same time I was going to do the valve cover gasket. Legacy777
If they're sold in packs of four, you'll need four packs of four. They likely do that since each cylinder requires four lifters.

idosubaru
mizpah engineering rebuilds subaru HLAs for about $3 or $5 each. us older generation guys use them all the time, i've never asked about newer gen stuff. seems like a lost point anyway. GeneralDisorder
If they are ticking it was abused at some point or has had infrequent oil changes, etc. They typically last the life of the engine with even average maintenance. If you really wanted to fix this - just get a decent used set of rocker assemblies and bolt them on. Or go to '97/'98 solid rockers. GD
