Numbchux Posted August 25, 2009 Share Posted August 25, 2009 meh, the tires will spin before the tranny breaks a standard EJ22 on stock-sized tires in FWD gets a little hairy, lots of wheel spin. But yea, you should be able to do it. you'll need an adapter plate, just like a 4WD. IIRC FWD clutch discs have different splines than 4WD, so you're options on a clutch will be drastically limited. but you *might* be able to get a good pressure plate for a 4WD EA82t or XT6, and put a FWD disc in there. I mean, the EA82 2wd 5spd is essentially the same as the old 2wd ea71 5spds. It is completely different and way wimpier than the 4wd or 2wd turbo 5spds. I would at least upgrade to an EJ 5spd. Hell, since it is FWD that would be an easy swap. Find a FWD 93 or 94 impreza and get the trans.......you shouldn't even need to swap axles. And that way you wouldn't need an adapter plate. It would work, but you are talking about 170 HP on a tranny meant for 90.... if you put enough rubber on the wheels to get decent traction you WILL break that tranny. I don't want to start an arguement..... But I am pretty sure the Impreza 1.8 FWD tranny is based on what had previously been the TURBO 2wd 5spd....which itself is just a 4wd 5spd without the rear output. There is just no way Fuji would recast a new housing for that same old tired 5spd from the 70's. It doesn't make sense. They used a better trans for all the 111 Horsepower 2wd turbo EA82s.......why would they go back to a wimpier tranny for an engine with more horsepower and torque? And Retool first to do so? I can't prove anyhting, as I don't have an early Impreza FSM or any old trannies......but I just have a pretty strong gut feeling on this one. zukiru Posted August 26, 2009 Share Posted August 26, 2009 (edited) the only internal difference between the impreza tranny I opened and the XT tranny I opened was the size of the shaft right at the point where the speed driven gear is. it was thicker there on the impreza. impreza also uses the smaller shaft and smaller clutches. (and why "upgrade" the tranny for the same clutch?) truth be told either way I agree with you that any tranny that allows for a bigger clutch is the best option. sadly enough the 93 impreza clutch disk is identical to the one in my 85 xt non turbo clutchkit. glcoupeguy Posted August 30, 2009 Author Share Posted August 30, 2009 someone beat me to the ej22t so me and a friend went up to pull-a-part... we found an ej20 though and pulled the block. looks like its gonna be a longer project though i was intrigued to find out that subaru has twin turbos for it. as far as the tranny goes, will i need to change the mounts for something newer?
