headgasket question

Recommended Posts

I'm relatively new to subaru's. I have a blown headgasket(s) in my loyale, and to change it, is it necessary to pull the motor? or is it easier? and where is the best place to buy this head gasket?

also, so I can utilize one thread... My drivers side front hub stripped out, meaning the splines on it went completely smooth, but my axle is fine, by some weird reason. where is a place I can buy this hub? no auto parts stores seem to recognize my car as having a "hub". which it clearly does.

pulling the motor takes longer. if you have a bad working environment, can't bend over the engine bay (bad back, knees, etc), then pulling the motor might be your best bet.

by the time you pull the motor you can already have one of the heads off.

otherwise this job is way faster in the car, there's nothing slow about doing it in the car if you have a ratcheting wrench (10mm) for the valve cover gaskets.

the easiest way to make a dent in time is to have air tools available. zipping out all those cam carrier bolts and head bolts is much nicer with air tools.

use Fel-Pro permatorque head gaskets only.

Autozone has the head gaskets - order them online as the store's have oddball pricing sometimes.

Get new manifold gaskets, and exhaust gaskets at the dealer ONLY.

Replace the head gaskets in the car - you will need the aforementioned 10mm ratcheting wrench.

As for the hub - inspect the axle splines VERY carefully. They are probably somewhat damaged and if so it should be replaced. You MUST replace the cone washer and bellville washer when you replace the damaged hub. Just visit any of the u-pull-it style yards and pickup an undamaged set. Torque the axle nut to 150 ft/lbs.
