I have a '97 legacy outback wagon with a '96 ej22 swapped into it. It has a

forester auto tranny swap from same gen. Anyone know how many quarts this tranny holds? I've heard 4 to 5 quarts, but i just want to confirm. i'm looking to flush and refill the tranny fluid. thanks in advance!

Hello,

Found this ONLINE for a '95 Legacy - yours should be very similar:

Automatic Transmision: Fluid capacity - 8.4 US qt

SEARCH on here on about flushing/replacing the tranny fluid if the tranny is a 'high miler'. Also, it takes 3-4 drain/refills to replace all the fluid.

The engine holds 4-5 quarts of oil.

Depending on whether the car is level, etc., draining via the pan plug will remove about 4 quarts. Full capacity is about 9-10 quarts. Even a single draining and refilling of the pan will replenish the fluid to some degree, but depending on the fluid condition anything up to a complete flush might be the better thing to do. Here are a couple of links that could help you decide what to do:
