logic23
I have done the early 2.5 dohc replacement several times. Wondering if the later 2.2 is a drop in, plug in and go replacement for the 2.5. Oh yeah can it be done with the phase 1 engine with some tricky mixing and matching of manifolds injectors etc. This is my personal car so im willing to experiment too nervous to do it on the customers cars. subaru360
It works, I've done a few phase 2 EJ25 to phase 2 EJ22 swaps. Just watch the crank and cam sprockets, there are 2 variations of each. Also MAF vs MAP, it's usually better to use the complete intake manifold off the old engine.
idosubaru
what he said - you have to swap the cam sprockets typically and keep your intake manifold. so it's doable but different than the old swaps.
logic23
OK so the 2.5 phase 2 on 2.2 phase 2 both have the same intakes? the earlier ones had different bolt patterns as i remember. Are the cam sprockets the same number of teeth but different timing marks for the sensors? If not what timing belt do you use? 2.5?
subaru360
Intakes fit either 2.2 or 2.5 on phase 2. Cam and crank sprockets are the same except on the back where they trigger the sensor. 2.2 and 2.5 phase 2 use the same timing belt.

Great to know for when I take the leap to the Phase 2 engines. My only experience with a 99 Forester wasn't so pleasant.
logic23
Thanks 360. I saw another thread where someone put a phase II 2.5 >> in a 98 legacy. It looked like from his article that the phase 1 intake bolts to the phase 2 2.5 so are these the same too? Is it just the 2.5 dohc that has the different bolt pattern? subaru360
Tom, Thanks. Great to know for when I take the leap to the Phase 2 engines. My only experience with a 99 Forester wasn't so pleasant. Now that they are getting older, I do a lot with Phase 2 engines. They aren't any harder to deal with. I do a lot with 02-03 wrx also now that they are $6-7k cars. Thanks 360. The Phase 1 2.5 dohc intake manifold does not fit on a phase 2 head.
