idosubaru
Friend has a 99 forester, with a bizarre issue. No Security system and he already had it disconnected for awhile. The lights are blinking with or without the key in....he's 3 hours away so I'm not really familiar with which lights are blinking but I believe it's the rear brake lights and interior lights even I think he said. It blinks for a while, stops, then starts again, repeat. He here's a clicking sound by the steering column-ish area. He just got done repairing a sheared keyway/crank pulley issue but I can't think of what that would have done? I'm thinking it has to be the hazzard light system or something? I have no idea how to guide him. I told him about USMB, I'll send him a link to this and see if he shows up.
Suzam
If he's disconnected the battery when he worked on the car it sounds like the visual part of an alarm system. See this similar problem post. I assume he tried starting with the key? Did he also try locking/unlocking the door with the key. Cars101.com describes some ways to defeat the alarm without the remote: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#code%20alarm Edited September 11, 2009 by Suzam
idosubaru
He says it doesn't have an alarm, but sure seems like it has something. Wouldn't it be making a noise if it was the alarm?

He says it doesn't have an alarm, but sure seems like it has something. Wouldn't it be making a noise if it was the alarm? i disconnected my alarm, i cut the wire to the alarm horn. the lights will still blink but no horn. if you unplug the alarm unit the door locks don't work as they should, i don't remember exactly how. (97 obw factory alarm) the 'clicking' under the dash in the column indicates the alarm. he needs to find the 'push button' or lock, unlock with the fob. will the car start?? Gloyale
He might just have the Keyless entry only, not alarm. But the keyless entry unit will do the same thing. He can simply hit *unlock* on the key fob. OR He can press and hold the reset button on the underside of the dash, left side. Or I believe he can start the car and lock and unlock the door 3 times? There should be a big yellow sticker on the radiator support in front of the battery if he has the keyless entry, and the sticker tells how to reset it. Suzam
I just read the cars101 link myself and the last line of the paragraph says: " Yes, the dashboard instrument panel lights will flash when the parking lights flash." This would be a clue if that is happening.
